Cultural Outsider Playlist Part 2: Introducing Jazz

Introduction:          In this blog, I've selected jazz as my musical style to explore from an outsider's perspective. I created a playlist of five jazz artist performances and analyzed each one by comparing its rhythms, instruments, themes, and emotional expression to another video in the set. Doing so helped me see how different artists shaped the genre in their own ways. Furthermore, I've also created two thoughtful questions for each video that only someone deeply familiar with the jazz culture  could fully understand. This blog highlights my creative and research-driven exploration of the jazz genre. Rake & Scrape : A Cultural insider playlist from The Bahamas

Introduction:      As a Bahamian, I decided to highlight Rake and Scrape, which is one of the most unique folk traditions in the Bahamas. This type of music is created with the accordion, goat-skin drum, and the scraping sound of a saw. Rake-n-Scrape is a big part of our culture, often played at family gatherings, local events, and even connected to the most famous festival, Junkanoo. Rake' n 'Scrape showcases how Bahamian music was shaped by its history. It combines African drumming rhythms with European dances such as the polka and quadrille, but Bahamians transformed it into a style that is uniquely ours. Islands such as Cat Island, Andros, and Long Island each add their own touch, giving the music a local flavor.
